American Flag: Why Stripes and Stars?
The American flag is a combination of Stars & Stripes. This name is also used for the American flag. Another version of its name is "Old Glory," which originated in the 1830s and was most often used during the 48-star version of the flag (1912-1959).
The current version of the American flag consists of 50 stars and 13 stripes. What do they symbolize? Thirteen equal-height horizontal stripes, arranged alternately red and white, with red stripes at the beginning and end of this symbol. In the upper left corner of the flag, there is a blue canton with fifty five-pointed white stars arranged in such a way that there are 6 stars in the upper and lower rows, while the middle rows are five-pointed, arranged alternately. 50 stars symbolize the 50 states of America, and 13 stripes represent the 13 original colonies.
History of the American Flag
An interesting fact may be that the American flag underwent 26 changes! The current 50-star flag, which is the longest-used version, has been in use since July 4, 1960. The previous 48-star flag was in use for 47 years.
The origin of the USA flag design is unknown. An interesting story is the one about Betsy Ross sewing the first flag based on a sketch by George Washington, who personally commissioned her for this task. British historian Sir Charles Fawcett suggested that the flag design may have been inspired by the flag and banner of the British East India Company. Another story about the American flag says that it was designed by Francis Hopkinson, who originally tried to arrange the stars in four rows - one vertical, one horizontal, and two diagonal. According to the same account, this arrangement was rejected due to its similarity to the British flag.
